The ramblings of an asian drama addict.

•September 25, 2008 • 3 Comments

Well really, the title says it all.

Asian drama.

Predictable, Cliche, Unrealistic…

But we all love them.

They’re addictive.

They make you cry, laugh and have unrealistic expectations of life (in particular, love).

Most likely, you have done or will do any of the following:

1. In order to watch another episode, you will stay at home all day and watch them on streaming sites and end up downloading too many bytes.
2. Find out how to use bittorent/ clubbox or etc to get the newest episodes.
3. Download the raw episode just hours after it was shown in its country even though you can’t understand a word they say, then watch it again a week later when subtitles are released or read the spoilers.
4. Get/steal your neighbour’s satellite so you can catch new episodes live.
5. Stay up all night to finish “just one more episode”.
6. Become a fangirl/fanboy on blogs/forums/livejournal/IM/facebook etc

Winter 2009 Drama Season

•January 5, 2009 • Leave a Comment

So, I’ve had a few commitments lately and haven’t had the time to blog, apologies.
Happy New Year everyone!

And onto the dramas,
At first glance, the lineup looks interesting, with a medical mystery [Voice] in the Monday 9 timeslot instead of a soppy romance. Interesting, no? Change of tactic by FujiTV after the last two romance dramas [Taiyo to Umi, Innocent Love] failed to produce high ratings? Maybe…
Voice: ヴォイス
Begins: 2009-Jan-12
Stars: Eita, Ikuta Toma [yeah, they had to throw in a Johnny’s…]

But then, of course, the romance appears in the Tuesday 9 slot with Mei-chan no Shituji and like a stupid fangirl, I’m jumping the bandwagon before I’ve even seen the previews…
So, I’m clearly going to watch this…
[But, come on, Mizushima Hiro [HKJ], Sato Takeru [Bloody Monday] and Eikura Nana [Proposal Daisakusen]…]
Mei-chan no Shituji: メイちゃんの執事
Begins: 2009-Jan-13
Stars: Well, you know…

mei-chan no shitsuji

Triangle catches my eye next. No, there are no particular male idols to help move along the storyline here, but this one may only need it’s storyline…
Triangle: トライアングル
Begins: 2009-Jan-06

And last but not least, Love Shuffle. Tamaki Hiroshi and Matsuda Shota are a welcome addition to Karina and DAIGO however, for some reason, I have this strange sinking feeling about this drama. It looks like another over hyped drama which could end up like Innocent Love. Huge hype- huge fail…
Maybe…

love-shuffle

What to watch? Well, as usual it’s up to you….

Autumn Drama Season 2008-09

•December 7, 2008 • 1 Comment

And an interesting line up this time for the Autumn jdrama season.
I’m considering:
– Innocent Love
– Celeb to Binbo Taro
– Bloody Monday

Well, I think that perhaps Innocent Love actually sounds too Last Friends-ish, nearly the same promotion picture…

Celeb to Binbo Taro? Same story- rich girl, poor guy.

Bloody Monday- genius hacker in Koizora’s Miura Haruma? well, ok.

I’ve watched a few eps of Innocent Love…it is really too stuffed up…
[drop]
Celeb to Binbo Taro- well, kinda, no very predictable…but sometimes, you need this kind of predictablity…when you don’t want to think…haha and it makes me laugh…
[keep]

Bloody Monday- so far so good…but relying on Miura Haruma as eye candy to continue watching…:P
[keep]

I’m currently watching…

I’M CURRENTLY WATCHING: Hotaru no Hikari, Galileo and Hachimitsu to Clover.

Finally, I took time off and sat down and watched a drama. Properly.

As in, I sat down and watched it from start to finish without skipping or watching on fastforward. Only happens when I come across a good drama. Hasn’t happened in a loooong time.

Hotaru no Hikari ホタルノヒカリ- I’m up episode two, thankyou to DoReMii for hardsubbing this series :).

First impressions:

Well, it’s not your typical romance drama. I liked the nice beginning and the different sides we get to see of Hotaru.

But as all asian dramas would have it, the predictablility of drama kicks in. Takano (her boss) is thrown into a situation which literally forces them to HAVE to live together. Sound familiar? Think Hana Kimi- Sano and Mizuki HAD to share a room, HYD- Makino and Domyouji COUDLN’T get out of that elevator and Nodame Cantible- Nodame and Chiaki HAD to live next door…

So there it is, the situation which forces them to have to accept each other. Neither of them like it, one of them bends first and starts to like the other. The other might take a bit longer, but finally realises the good qualities which he/she has fallen in love with…

“sigh” Asian dramas.

But, that’s what makes us love them…:P

To continue or to drop? Continue, definitely! This is a pretty good first impression, but I hope the rest of the series will stay this way…

Galileo-  ガリレオ thanks to SARS-Fansubs for subbing this!!! I’ve just started and onto episode three

First impressions:

It’s not the typical romance drama, but I decided to give this drama a try, I mean, why not? It had good ratings and a SP made…

The scientific explanations behind each and every case made me want to keep watching. I loved how everything makes sense at the end but from episode three, I can see the episodic pattern of each episode. I had really wanted to watch different genre of drama apart from romance dramas, I tried Kurosagi but didn’t get the kind of mystery drama I was expecting.

To continue or to drop? I’m going to continue with this…

Hachimitsu to Clover- ハチミツとクローバー thankyou SARS-Fansubs again!!!

Dropped this at episode one… sorry to those who loved this…but I didn’t like it….sooorrrryyy

To continue or to drop? Well, drop.

It’s The Little Things

It’s these little small things which really make us remeber something.

These small moments really “signpost” Hana Yori Dango:

– “Arrienatsuno!!!!”

– Makino jumping before she punches someone

– Domyouji’s fur coat (in a variety of colours and animal patterns)

– Domyouji’s language stuff-ups

– Soujiroh running away from Yuki

Innocent Love – [イノセント・ラヴ]

So, Horikita Maki’s landed herself another starring role in the new drama, Innocent Love. I knew her from Hanazakari no Kimi Tachie, Kurosagi and Nobuta wo Produce, where she showed us her ability to act as many different characters but still with the same charm.

This drama falls into the category of tragedorama (j-drama tragedies), probably the first tragedorama I’ve seen her act in. Hana Kimi and Nobuta were both comedorama (j-drama comedies): light-hearted, silly entertainment, but this, it’s something new for Maki.

Well, do you think this drama will hit Japan (and indeed, the world of asian drama addicts)?

It’s airing on Fuji TV in the prime time spot of Monday 9. To those who aren’t familiar with this, the Monday 9 spot often hosts the most anticipated and watched drama of the season. It’s often a very popular drama and usually, it falls into the romance category. To prove it’s worth: Proposal Daisakusen, CHANGE, Nodame Cantible and Galileo were all aired in this spot.

An arson took it all away from Akiyama Kanon seven years ago. Her parents died in that fire, her brother was arrested as the prime suspect and her carefree life disappeared from that instant. She was shunned by the town as the sister of a murderer, yet she believes in her brother’s innocence and often pays him visits with words of encouragement. As life gets harder when nobody is willing to give her a job, Kanon decides to try her luck in the city and there she meets the man of her destiny…

(Source: Wikipedia- so, give or take a few ounces of truth)

For Horikita Maki fans, I’m sure they’ll be waiting for this in anticipation.

What to watch…

What to watch next? A good question to ask…

How do I find new good dorama?

Well, I’ve decided that there are two types of J-drama:

Comedy/ Happy/ Makes-You-Feel-Good-After-Watching-It drama

or

Tragedy/ Touching/ OMG-I-Will-Bawl-My-Eyes-Out drama

How Shakespearian…

With comedy/ feel good comes dramas like: Hana Kimi, Hana Yori Dango, Gokusen

Tragedy: 1 Litre of Tears (one or more of the characters usually suffers from a life-changing illness)

So, my list of dramas to watch:

– Innocent Love

– Hotaru no Hikari

– Bara no nai Hanaya

And some older ones:

– Hero

Nodame Cantible – [のだめカンタービレ]

Nodame Cantible – [のだめカンタービレ]

This romance story is quite different to others. Well, there is no scheming, evil antagonist who tries to break them apart, instead they  are their own enemies (in a way…).

Synopsis: Noda Megumi or Nodame is an extremely talented pianist studying at the Momogaoka College of Music. However, her only problem is her well-trained ear, she prefers to play by ear instead of reading the score. She is quite a messy character with junk strewn all over her room that loves to eat. Chiaki Sinichi is the total opposite. While he is also extremely talented in piano and violin, he dreams of becoming a conductor. An arrogant multi-lingual perfectionist who once lived abroad in the music capitals of the world as a young boy, he feels mired in Japan because of a childhood phobia.

And as the story goes, they fall in love (OMG, NO WAY!). While Nodame is head over heels for him, Chiaki takes a little longer to love Nodame’s weird characteristics. Both of them really help each other to explore music in different ways.

– Nodame Cantible (JAP): ROMANCE, COMEDY

Stars: Ueno Juri, Tamaki Hiroshi

Eps: 11 + 2SP

Subs: SARS-Fansubs

Comments:

Well, if you love piano as much as I do, I guarantee you will love this drama. However, if you’re not so much into classical music and music, this drama will definitely capture your interest anyway. It was an inspirational drama for pianists. It made me want to sit at the piano and not stop practising for hours. I guess, if you’re into romance, you don’t get much of that here (it’s more focused on the music). Comedy? Well, in some parts…

Favourite moments:

– S-Oke and the first ever performance of Beethoven’s 7th AND of course, the final performance of Beethoven’s 7th with R-S-Oke.

– The performance of Rhapsody in Blue

“da da da DA….” (small section from Rhapsody in Blue)
